Service navigation not being used

Pattern Checker

What does this mean?

This indicates that the page is using a service name in the GOV.UK header rather than the service navigation component.

For example the page header may look like the screenshot below:

Service name is in the black GOV.UK banner, the service navigation component is not being used.

The service navigation component is a replacement for the service name presence in the GOV.UK header.

Impact on users

The impact on users is the potential lack of consistency due to some services using the old style of service names in the header and some using the new service navigation pattern.

How to fix

Remove the service name from the GOV.UK header. If the service name is linked, be sure to remove the link as well.

The service name in the header should not be used in addition to the service navigation.

Add a service navigation component to the top of the page, this can just contain the service name as in the screenshot below:

Service name has been removed from the black GOV.UK banner and is only present in the service navigation banner below it.

You will need to add a govuk-header--full-width-border class to the existing govuk-header to extend the blue border across the page.

Check the service name in the service navigation matches that in the page's title element.

Notes

The service navigation component was introduced in August 2024 (released in GOV.UK Frontend v5.6.0).

This issue is set at "Info" level, but will be increased to "Warn" at a future point as the service name in the GOV.UK header will be deprecated at some point in the future.
